A Bit of History

VAKULA KOTTKE, PLC is located in the historic Day Octagon building in downtown Prescott. The Day Octagon building was constructed in 1877 and served as the Arizona Territory's first surgical hospital. Dr. Warren Erasmus Day performed surgery, pulled teeth, delivered babies, fitted eyeglasses and provided for other medical needs at the hospital in Prescott, the Arizona Territory's Capitol.

The building is also the first fired-brick building constructed in Arizona. The Day Octagon building was one of only three significant buildings which survived Prescott's devastating 1901 fire which destroyed several city blocks. The Day Octagon building was renovated in 1978 but in 2002 sustained significant fire damage throughout several interior rooms. The building was completely restored in 2003 and it remains as one of Prescott's most interesting and historic buildings. The Day Octagon building is believed to be the only remaining historic, eight-sided house in the southwest.

The building also previously housed one of Arizona's first law firms, Fitz & Churchill, in the late 1800's. Since 2001 the Day Octagon building has served as law offices for the firm.
